@CharlieSheen joins Twitter, world watches in excited horror

"America's Bad Boy", Charlie Sheen, has joined Twitter. If this doesn't interest to you, I'll assume you have been living under a rock in recent days/weeks/years.
Charlie Sheen's wild antics, rants, and less-than-sober lifestyle has landed him in the spotlight as well as in some hot water. Celebrity-obsessed America has been following his every move starting a wave of speculation and dialogue as to his drug use, at-home rehabilitation, and outrageous remarks on national television. His hit show "Two and a Half Men", for which he is now the highest paid TV actor in the nation, has even been shut down for the remainder of the season due to his recent escapades. So what's the best plan of action for Mr. Sheen? Probably not to start a Twitter account.

Earlier today, @CharlieSheen was verified thus confirming that the account is really him. According to Gawker, the Twitter account is "gaining followers at a rate of approximately 500/second" - even though he has yet to post a single tweet or set up any profile information, including a picture. The Huffington Post also reported that at one point, the account gained 4,812 followers in 60 seconds.

So I am wondering: why on earth would Charlie Sheen be allowed to create a Twitter account? Wouldn't his PR people stop that immediately considering his outlandish, ridiculous tendencies? Sure, it will be extremely entertaining to watch, but won't it likely lead to lots of embarrassment for him and possibly cause damage to his career?

Oh, his publicist quit on Monday. That explains it.

  1. At this point PR reps have had to have thrown in the towel in regards to Charlie. The way I see it is that he's already gone crazy, may as well let him run with it because there is no stopping it. I think PR reps that haven't given up on his career have their work cut out for them!!

  2. I think his PR reps saw his Twitter account as a new opportunity for Sheen. From how I see it, even though the former actor is seen as “crazy” the public seems to love him for it and he’s more popular now than ever before. This can be seen by his record breaking 1,000 followers in 26 hours. His acting career might be over (because I know that I would never give him a job) but he is using his Twitter account to make money and keep is celebrity status. If his PR people were able to predict this, then doesn’t this make it a PR success?

  3. You have a valid point there. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what he does next and how long everyone will stay interested for. It's inevitable that this too will get old; his quotes etc may be hilarious from an outsiders view right now, but eventually it will become old news. I'm interested to see how it unfolds as well as if he'll even bother to hire a new PR rep since his quit.

  4. I agree that this will get old quickly. I also think how he’s treated the women in his life is absolutely terrible. It's obvious that Mr. Sheen is a man who is not in possession of a clear view of reality.I hope no PR rep in their right mind would work for this man. He is ill and needs to be helped.
